What is Biomimetic Dentistry?

Biomimetic dentistry, a type of tooth conserving dentistry, treats weak, fractured, and decayed teeth in a way that keeps them strong and seals them from bacterial invasion. My practice has practically eliminated cutting teeth down for crowns and destructive root canal treatment. Now our patients are happier and our Staff enjoy the practice more.

Biomimetic means to copy or mimic nature.
Nature is our ideal model to imitate. In order to mimic nature we must understand what nature looks like or feels like. We need to know how it moves or behaves. In other words, we can study nature’s properties so that we can better duplicate it. In the past and even today the world tries to improve nature by attempting to make synthetic materials that are longer, stiffer and seemingly more beautiful. This often leads to undesirable results-even catastrophic failures. Dentistry has had the problems mostly because we did not have the knowledge or the technology to imitate natural teeth. Now it is possible to rebuild teeth with materials that simulate natural teeth much more closely, and hold up better to constant chewing. We have studied the dental scientific literature and I have applied those techniques to my patients. My staff and my patients can testify that the teeth restored with our biometric restorations feel and look much better than then traditional dentistry.

Modern adhesives and bonding techniques are the driving force of biomimetic dentistry.
With traditional dentistry we had to destroy healthy tooth structure in order to retain a new restoration. In other words, we had to destroy in order to create. Now we are able to bond or glue teeth back together and even add missing parts of the tooth reliably without removing volumes of precious tooth structure. It has the added value of sealing the tooth from bacterial infection. In our practice this has mostly eliminated the need for painful and destructive crowns and root canal treatment with its associated pins, post, slots, grooves and other non-adhesive retention features.

Biomimetic dentistry is conservative.
One more important aspect about biomimetic dentistry needs to be addressed- less dentistry is the best dentistry; we can even say no dentistry is the best dentistry. Much of the surgical aspect of dentistry can be eliminated or prevented with modern science. Periodontal disease and caries (decay) can practically be eliminated with Ozone treatment, hygiene, and properly placed pit and fissure sealants. If caries or old fillings are existing, they can be treated with the most conservative materials and techniques. We can be treated with the most conservative materials and techniques. We can say that preservation and conservation lie at the heat of Biomimetic Dentistry. It is a win-win situation for everyone.
